Woodland Preserve Residence
PROJECT SCOPE
Custom Home
LOCATION
Johns Island, South Carolina
A gravel drive curves through the pines and the house appears all at once, dark charcoal against the woods, shingled gables and a deep front porch under standing seam metal. Also in Briars Creek, it takes the opposite approach from its neighbor down the road: where that house disappears into the trees, this one holds its own against them.
The back is where the day happens. A wall of glass folds away and the living room runs straight out to the deck, the pool set into it, and the pond and the woods beyond. The fireplace is a single slab of dark stone let into shiplap, and the doors stay open until the bugs win.
The kitchen commits. Black cabinets and brass against white herringbone tile, a plaster hood, black domes over the island. In the primary shower, a wall of black tile carries a digital control, body sprays, and two ceiling rainheads over a stone bench. Off the garage, a stair lands in a passage lined floor to ceiling in cypress, chevron above the door, the one place in the house where the wood is the whole point.
The house holds a dark exterior in Lowcountry sun with cement board and a metal roof, and it sits well back from the pond with the pines untouched around it. The woods that made the lot worth building on are still doing the work.
