Tideland Residence

On the Stono River on Johns Island, this home was built to follow the light across the water. Rooms open toward the river. The great room gives way to a pool deck through a wall of glass, so the line between inside and out mostly disappears by late afternoon.

Move through it and the house keeps offering something. A barrel-vaulted gallery draws you the length of the main floor. Arched openings frame the water beyond. Upstairs, a loft hides above one of the bedrooms, and from the bunk room the Cooper River bridges sit on the horizon, a detail that means something to anyone who grew up here.

The clients committed fully to the interiors, and alongside The Guest House Studio, those choices were built exactly as drawn. Plaster walls that shift with the light. Hand-painted murals. A powder room you want to linger in. Herringbone floors laid the long way through the house. Doors trimmed to follow the exact radius of the arches they close against, which sounds small until you see one that isn't.

Underneath it all is a house built with real respect for where it sits. Elevated well above the flood line, framed and finished for salt air and weather, and set back to leave the riverfront buffer intact. It's meant to be here in fifty years, still doing what it does now.
